Walking benefits for fat loss and mortality reduction

Health experts and recent research highlight the benefits of walking for fat loss and mortality reduction. Fitness practitioner Ade Rai suggests that walking can be more effective than running for burning fat if done at the correct intensity. He recommends maintaining a heart rate between 60% and 80% of the maximum, calculated by subtracting age from 220 and applying the percentage.

Ade Rai proposes two specific strategies: walking approximately 30 minutes after consuming carbohydrates to help the body use glucose, and performing fasted cardio by walking in the morning before breakfast to utilize stored energy.

Complementary research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine involving 70,000 adults in Australia and Spain indicates that walking faster for 30 minutes a day can lower mortality risks, particularly for those who take fewer than 5,000 steps daily. Nicholas Koemel of Monash University noted that increasing walking speed can serve as a health benefit for individuals unable to increase their total daily step count. However, the study maintained that walking between 7,500 and 10,000 steps per day remains associated with the lowest mortality risk, regardless of speed.
