Walking speed and step counts linked to increased longevity
Recent scientific studies suggest that walking speed and total step counts are significant indicators of longevity and overall health. Research involving nearly 500,000 participants from the UK Biobank, analyzed by the University of Leicester, indicates that individuals who report a faster walking pace tend to have a higher predicted lifespan, regardless of their BMI.
Further data published in JAMA shows that for individuals over 65, every 0.1 m/s increase in walking speed is associated with an approximately 12 percent reduction in mortality risk. Additionally, a study involving over 13,000 women published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine highlights that total step volume is more critical than daily frequency. Achieving at least 4,000 steps even just one or two days a week was linked to a 26 percent reduction in all-cause mortality and a 27 percent reduction in cardiovascular disease mortality.
While a faster pace serves as a marker for physical fitness and resilience, researchers note that these findings do not guarantee longevity but provide valuable insights into bodily efficiency and mortality risks.
