Wallonia faces unpaid winter road maintenance bills

The Walloon regional government is facing criticism for failing to pay 144 invoices related to winter road maintenance services. The outstanding amount totals 527,149 euros, owed to 41 different service providers for tasks such as snow removal and salt spreading.

Minister François Desquesnes described the situation as ‘inadmissible’ and noted that the delays have resulted in additional interest charges for the region. He stated that a budget reallocation order is currently underway to settle these past debts and prepare for the upcoming winter season. To prevent future issues, the government plans to extend the Sofico network to all regional roads by 2028 to ensure immediate financial availability.
