Walmart refuses refund after child spends $2,000 on Roblox cards
An Ontario family is seeking recourse after their 11-year-old son spent $2,000 in cash on Roblox gift cards at a Walmart store. The parents, Hong Jin and Jason Kim, reported that the child took an envelope containing emergency savings before visiting his grandmother. While at Walmart, the boy reportedly slipped away from his grandmother and made two separate $1,000 purchases of gaming cards.
Walmart has declined to refund the money, citing a strict policy regarding activated gift cards. A company spokesperson stated that the retailer reviewed the transaction and determined that associates correctly applied the $1,000 transaction limit for gift cards. The spokesperson also noted that there are no age restrictions for purchasing gift cards at Walmart Canada, though individual issuers may have their own requirements for redemption.
