Walmart to accept Apple Pay and Google Pay at U.S. stores

Walmart has announced it will begin accepting contactless tap-to-pay technology, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations starting August 24, 2026. This move marks a significant shift for the retail giant, which has long been a major holdout against Near Field Communication (NFC) based mobile payments, instead favoring its own proprietary Walmart Pay system that utilizes QR codes.

The company plans a phased rollout, aiming to have tap-to-pay capabilities available at all U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club stores by the end of 2026. Additionally, the technology is expected to be implemented at the company’s fuel stations by mid-2027.

Walmart stated that the decision is intended to provide customers with more choice and flexibility at checkout. While the new digital wallet options are being introduced, Walmart Pay will remain an available payment method alongside cash, credit cards, and other contactless options.
