Walmart adoption of mobile contactless payments

Overview

Walmart is expanding its digital payment capabilities by accepting contactless tap-to-pay technology, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay, beginning August 24, 2026. The rollout initially targets select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, with a goal of full deployment across all U.S. stores by the end of 2026 and implementation at fuel stations by mid-2027.

This shift toward Near Field Communication (NFC) technology aims to provide “more choice and flexibility at checkout” and align with consumer preferences. The move marks a significant change in strategy, as the retailer had previously prioritized its own proprietary systems. While the company will continue to offer its Walmart Pay system—which utilizes QR codes and supports electronic balances for social programs like SNAP and WIC—it is moving away from making its own application a requirement for checkout. Customers will also be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards to their digital wallets.

In conjunction with these digital expansions, Walmart is also implementing strategic price reductions. The retailer is reinvesting $3 billion into price cuts, using unconsumed customs duties to offset inflation in food and fuel costs. During the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, the company reported 11,000 temporary price cuts, up from 7,200 in the previous quarter. This follows a period of significant e-commerce growth, including a 23% global increase in the second quarter.
