China’s Wang Huning leads delegation to North Korea

China’s Politburo Standing Committee member and CPPCC chairman Wang Huning headed a Chinese party‑and‑government delegation to Pyongyang from July 15‑17, 2026. The visit, timed to the 65th anniversary of the 1961 Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, included talks with senior North Korean officials such as Jo Yong‑Won of the Workers’ Party. Both sides said they would deepen strategic communication, expand party‑to‑party exchanges and broaden cooperation in economic, cultural and other fields. Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to implement the agreements reached by President Xi Jinping and Kim Jong‑un during Xi’s June summit in Pyongyang, while Jo stressed that the “rapidly changing international political situation has required the two countries to further strengthen militant unity and solidarity.” The delegation follows a recent visit by North Korean Premier Pak Thae‑song to Beijing and Xi’s own historic trip to Pyongyang, underscoring a continued effort to institutionalise closer ties amid heightened regional security tensions.
