China‑North Korea diplomatic surge (June‑July 2026)

Overview

In early June 2026 Chinese President Xi Jinping made a two‑day state visit to Pyongyang – the first by a Chinese leader since 2019 – and signed a joint statement calling the bilateral relationship “unbreakable”. The visit marked a shift toward “strategic coordination” and omitted any reference to North Korea’s nuclear programme, a change read as tacit Chinese acceptance.

Kim Jong Un sent a congratulatory message on the Chinese Communist Party’s 105th anniversary, and North Korean Premier Pak Thae‑song made a three‑day trip to Beijing for the 65th anniversary of the 1961 Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance Treaty. Both sides reaffirmed the treaty’s mutual‑defence clause, pledged deeper cooperation across politics, economics, culture, science, technology and defence, and underscored mutual support on Taiwan and opposition to U.S. pressure.

On 11 July the two leaders exchanged letters reiterating “solid and unbreakable” ties and pledging to preserve the historic bond. Pak’s delegation toured Beijing, visiting the CPC History Exhibition Hall, a rail‑transit command centre and a green‑energy demonstration project, and pledged to “comprehensively expand and develop” the relationship.

From 15–17 July Politburo Standing Committee member Wang Huning led a senior Chinese party‑state delegation to Pyongyang, timed with the treaty anniversary. The talks aimed to upgrade the partnership to the “strongest strategic partnership” and to expand cooperation in trade, agriculture, technology, healthcare, transport and people‑to‑people exchanges. Wang met senior official Jo Yong‑Won, reaffirmed China’s commitment to implement Xi’s agreements, and discussed deeper collaboration in public‑welfare projects, tactical communication and cultural ties.

On 16 July Wang Huning and Kim Jong Un again pledged to implement the June agreements, emphasising strategic communication, tactical cooperation and new public‑welfare initiatives, while analysts noted the visits seek to reinforce China’s influence as North Korea deepens ties with Russia.
