Zagreb students face housing shortage and high rents

Students in Zagreb are facing significant difficulties finding affordable housing for the 2026/2027 academic year. The demand for student dormitories has exceeded capacity, with the Student Center in Zagreb receiving 9,754 applications for only 6,097 available beds across four dormitories.

Capacity is further reduced by the renovation of two pavilions at the Stjepan Radić Student Dormitory, which has resulted in 852 fewer available spots. While 906 students are eligible for state subsidies for private accommodation, the monthly allowance of 152 euros is reportedly insufficient, as students report paying up to 500 euros per month for small apartments including utilities.

In addition to high costs, students have reported issues with landlords failing to honor agreements and rental advertisements not accurately reflecting the condition of the properties.
