Warsaw authorized to reduce wild boar population

The Mazovian Voivodeship Sejmik has passed a resolution allowing for the population reduction of wild boars within Warsaw. The new regulations will remain in effect for two years from the date of implementation.

This decision follows a request from the President of Warsaw in response to rising numbers of wild boars and increasing human-wildlife conflict. Data from Warsaw City Forests through July 2026 recorded approximately 14,500 reports of wild boar presence and 159 attacks on people.

The resolution does not mandate a specific quota for culling. Instead, it establishes criteria for intervention. Animals may be targeted if they pose an extraordinary threat to human life, health, or property. Specific criteria include animals that have lost their natural fear of humans, those regularly inhabiting urbanized or residential areas, and those present in public road corridors.

Two methods for population reduction are permitted: reductionary culling and capture followed by euthanasia. The choice of method rests with the entities commissioned by the city. Due to African Swine Fever (ASF) concerns, certain transport and relocation options are restricted.
