Warsaw hospital performs first non-invasive glaucoma surgeries in Poland
Specialists at the Samodzielny Publiczny Kliniczny Szpital Okulistyczny in Warsaw have performed the first non-invasive glaucoma surgeries in Poland using femtosecond laser technology. The facility is only the fourth center in the world to perform these specific procedures.
The new surgical method, known as FLigHT (Femtosecond Laser, Image-Guided, High-precision Trabeculotomy), utilizes the ViaLuxe femtosecond laser system. Unlike traditional trabeculectomy or MIGS surgery, which require physical incisions or the insertion of implants, this method is incision-free. The laser works through the intact, transparent cornea to create a precise microscopic opening in the trabecular meshwork, facilitating the drainage of aqueous humor to reduce intraocular pressure.
The technology, which was acquired with assistance from European Union funds, is intended for patients with open-angle glaucoma in both mild and advanced stages. The medical team, led by Director Prof. Jacek P. Szaflik, describes the implementation as a breakthrough for Polish ophthalmology.
