Medical advancements in Poland
Overview
Medical developments in Poland have recently highlighted advancements in both cardiac and ophthalmic care.
In cardiology, specialists in Łódź have implemented minimally invasive percutaneous pulmonary valve replacements at the Institute of Mother and Child Health Center. This technique allows for valve insertion via the femoral vein, avoiding chest surgery. Concurrently, health initiatives have focused on hypertension awareness, noting that approximately 11 million adults in Poland may face high blood pressure issues.
In the field of ophthalmology, new surgical milestones have been reached. In Warsaw, the Independent Public Clinical Ophthalmology Hospital performed the first glaucoma treatments in the country using the FLigHT method. This procedure utilizes a high-precision femtosecond laser to create microscopic channels in the eye to improve fluid drainage without the need for surgical incisions or implants. The facility is the first in Poland and only the fourth globally to implement this technology. The method, known as Femtosecond Laser, Image-Guided, High-precision Trabeculotomy, was acquired with assistance from European Union funds and is intended for patients with open-angle glaucoma.
Additionally, in Nowy Targ, the OKO-TEST clinic conducted the first cataract surgery in Poland involving the implantation of a next-generation hydrophobic intraocular lens. Developed using artificial intelligence, this lens features non-diffractive spiral optics designed to provide a continuous range of vision from near to far while minimizing light loss and visual disturbances such as halos. This advancement aims to provide high-quality vision and reduce the risk of posterior capsule opacification.
