The Washington Capitals have signed forward Ryan Leonard to an eight-year contract extension. The deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $10.5 million and is set to take effect starting with the 2027-28 season.

This extension is notable as it precedes new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rules that will limit contract extensions to a maximum of seven years. Leonard, a former eighth overall pick in the 2023 draft, becomes the most expensive player in NHL history to sign such a deal with fewer than 100 career games played. During his rookie season, Leonard recorded 20 goals and 45 points in 75 games.

Separately, teammate Cole Hutson indicated at the Capitals Rookie Camp that plans for Leonard and Hutson to live together as roommates for the upcoming season are unlikely to proceed.
