Washington University researchers discover new skull immune structures
Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have identified previously unknown immunological structures within the bone marrow of the skull. Published in the journal Nature, the study describes these structures as lymphoid formations similar to lymph nodes, primarily located in the posterior regions of the skull, such as the occipital and interparietal bones.
These formations house specialized immune cells, including B cells, follicular helper T cells, and antigen-presenting cells. They also feature germinal-like centers where B cells activate to produce antibodies. This discovery provides a critical link in the communication pathway between the central nervous system and the body's immune defenses.
Previously, the brain was often viewed as an organ relatively isolated from the immune system. However, this research highlights a communication route where components from the brain can reach the skull bone marrow, potentially offering new therapeutic avenues for treating brain cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
