Wasim Akram expresses concern for Imran Khan's health in prison

Former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram has expressed concern regarding the health of former Prime Minister and cricket legend Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since 2022. Akram, describing Khan as a friend and mentor, stated that while legal matters should remain with the courts, there should be “no compromise” regarding his physical wellbeing.

Akram joins a growing number of international cricket figures calling for humane treatment and medical access for the 73-year-old. A group of 22 former international captains recently sent an open letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requesting that Khan be granted access to his personal doctor and family members. Other prominent figures, including West Indies legend Brian Lara and Australian captain Pat Cummins, have also voiced support for the appeal for dignity and proper medical care.

Khan has denied all wrongdoing in the corruption cases that led to his conviction. The situation has also caused friction within the sporting community; recent interviews by Khan’s sons with English media led to tensions between the Pakistan Cricket Board and broadcasters during the England-Pakistan series.
