Wassenaar and Leiden bicycle path closure sparks safety concerns

The bicycle path along the Oude Trambaan near the Ommedijkseweg, connecting Wassenaar and Leiden, is scheduled to close for at least fourteen months starting in October 2026. The closure is necessary to facilitate the construction of a heat network by WarmtelinQ and contractor HAK.

The Fietsersbond (Cyclists' Union) has criticized the proposed detour via Stevenshof and Haagse Schouw as ‘unacceptable,’ citing safety risks such as roundabouts, multiple crossings, and an unlit tunnel that could be hazardous during winter. While the union claims their suggested alternatives were ignored, the municipality of Wassenaar stated that discussions regarding the connection are ongoing.

Wendy Frigge, the Wassenaar Alderman for Mobility, emphasized that ensuring a safe and accessible route between the two cities remains a priority. Local authorities from Wassenaar and Leiden, along with the province and Katwijk, are currently examining various scenarios to address traffic safety, ease of use, and lighting before a final decision is reached in September.
