Wassenaar-Leiden bicycle path closure
Overview
A bicycle path along the Oude Trambaan near Ommedijkseweg, which connects Wassenaar and Leiden, is scheduled to close for at least fourteen months beginning in October 2026. The closure is required to allow WarmtelinQ and contractor HAK to construct a heat network.
The Fietsersbond (Cyclists' Union) has labeled the proposed detour via Stevenshof and Haagse Schouw as ‘unacceptable’, pointing to safety risks involving roundabouts, multiple crossings, and an unlit tunnel. While the union claims their alternative suggestions were ignored, the municipality of Wassenaar has stated that discussions regarding the connection are ongoing.
Wassenaar Alderman for Mobility Wendy Frigge noted that maintaining a safe and accessible route between the cities remains a priority. Local authorities from Wassenaar, Leiden, Katwijk, and the province are currently reviewing scenarios to address lighting, ease of use, and traffic safety before a final decision is made in September.
