Welgesheim Waste‑Site Fire Sends Nine Firefighters to Hospital

A large fire broke out on 21 June 2026 at a waste‑site in Welgesheim, Kreis Mainz‑Bingen. About 100 tonnes of commercial waste stored in a warehouse ignited, producing a towering smoke column that forced the temporary closure of the railway line between Bingen and Worms. Approximately 200 emergency personnel, including 200 firefighters, responded. The intense heat, prolonged exposure, and work under self‑contained breathing apparatus led nine firefighters to be taken to hospital as a precaution, with four more receiving treatment for heat‑related ailments. The fire was eventually extinguished after the burnt material was removed to an open area and the site was thoroughly checked for remaining hot spots. The cause of the blaze and the full extent of the damage remain under investigation. No civilian injuries were reported, and residents were advised to keep windows closed and ventilation systems turned off while air‑quality monitoring continued.
