Waste-to-energy initiatives advance in Peru and Spain
Various waste-to-energy initiatives are advancing the use of organic and industrial waste as substitutes for fossil fuels.
In Peru, Ciudad Limpia is processing between 700 and 800 tons of industrial and hospital waste monthly. By treating hazardous industrial waste and biosanitary materials, the company generates steam and heat to replace gas and coal in production processes. This model aims to integrate waste into the circular economy and prevent materials from entering landfills.
In Spain, the Metabarri plant located in the Artigas Ecopark in Bizkaia is designed to process up to 50,000 tons of organic matter annually. The facility, a collaboration between the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia, Garbiker, the Basque Energy Agency, and PreZero, will produce approximately 4 million cubic meters of biomethane. At full capacity, the plant is expected to generate 43.6 GWh per year, enough to power roughly 12,700 homes while potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95% compared to fossil fuels.
