Water access improves in rural Ghanaian communities through new boreholes

New water infrastructure projects have been completed in several rural Ghanaian communities to address long-standing shortages of potable water.

In the Ashanti Region, the non-profit WellsForAll has completed its 26th mechanised borehole in Mantukwa. Drilled to a depth of 120 metres, the system utilizes an electric submersible pump and a 3,000-litre overhead storage tank. The project aims to replace reliance on unprotected streams and rivers, reducing the travel time for residents—particularly women and children—from 30 minutes to just a few minutes. Independent testing confirmed the water meets World Health Organization limits, with no E. coli or coliform detected.

In the Navrongo Central constituency, Member of Parliament Simon Aworigo facilitated the drilling of three boreholes in Biu-Jaago, Kologo-Awunyabisi, and Naaga-Nyanbisiya. These interventions follow resident appeals regarding water scarcity, which is especially severe during the dry season. The new facilities are intended to reduce the distance residents must travel to neighboring communities and ease pressure on existing water sources.
