Water accidents reported at beaches in Taiwan and Japan
Multiple water-related accidents involving swimmers have been reported in Taiwan and Japan during the summer holiday period.
In Taiwan, a 15-year-old male student was rescued after being swept approximately 100 meters offshore by waves at Shaluun Beach in the Tamsui District. Police, fire departments, and coast guard personnel coordinated the rescue; the student was found conscious and without life-threatening injuries and was transported to Tamsui MacKay Memorial Hospital.
In Japan, several fatal incidents occurred during the Obon holiday. In Hokota, Ibaraki Prefecture, three women were swept away by waves in an area where swimming is prohibited due to rip currents. One woman died at the hospital, and another remains in serious condition. Additionally, a 19-year-old Vietnamese man died in Makinohara, Shizuoka Prefecture, after losing consciousness in the ocean. Police have issued warnings to avoid waterfront areas during poor weather or when feeling unwell.
