Water bomber helicopters deployed to fight vegetation fires in France

Water bomber helicopters are proving essential in combating vegetation fires across different French territories. In Mayotte, the SDIS has utilized a rented aircraft since August 15 to tackle fires exacerbated by drought and wind. The helicopter can carry approximately 800 liters of water, which it can draw directly from the lagoon to avoid straining the local potable water supply. In just over a month, the aircraft has completed more than 350 drops and 20 flight hours, including significant work during the Ouangani fire.

Similarly, in the Aude department, the Morane 11 helicopter provided critical support from July 1 to September 22, 2026. The rental, costing approximately 447,581 euros, supported missions across 65 communes. The aircraft completed 95 flight hours and 710 water drops, totaling 568 tons of water. Local authorities noted that the helicopter was vital for protecting homes, limiting fire spread, and providing reconnaissance for ground teams.
