Water crises hit Lumajang and Magelang regions in Indonesia
Multiple regions in Indonesia are facing severe water shortages due to ongoing drought conditions. In Lumajang, East Java, the local government has extended the drought emergency status until December 11, 2026. The crisis affects six districts, including Ranuyoso, Klakah, and Senduro. To address the shortage, the Lumajang Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is deploying six water tankers, each with a 5,000-liter capacity, to meet a target of 250 distribution points.
In Magelang, Central Java, approximately 80 hamlets across 45 villages in 13 districts have been impacted by the lack of clean water. The shortage affects households, schools, boarding schools, and places of worship. Local authorities are coordinating with organizations such as Baznas and the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) to distribute water and fund long-term infrastructure projects, including the construction of wells and water tanks, to reduce dependency on emergency water drops.
