Indonesia faces widespread drought and agricultural crisis

Severe drought conditions, driven largely by the El Niño phenomenon, are causing widespread water scarcity and agricultural damage across several regions in Indonesia.

In West Nusa Tenggara, nine out of ten regencies are affected, with over 263,000 people in 227 villages facing shortages. Bima, Sumbawa, and East Lombok have declared emergency statuses. The BPBD has distributed 3.3 million liters of clean water to mitigate the crisis, while the central government has provided over Rp1.8 billion in logistical support, including pumps and water tanks.

In East Java, the Gonggang Reservoir in Magetan has depleted to just 20 percent of its normal capacity, leaving farmers in the Sarangan area unable to irrigate crops. This has led to the failure of vegetable harvests, including tomatoes, cabbage, and chili.

In Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, the DKP3 agency is preparing emergency water distribution for agricultural lands and community wells as the lack of rainfall threatens local food security.
