Indonesia faces widespread water crisis due to prolonged drought

A prolonged dry season and El Niño phenomenon have triggered widespread water crises across multiple regions in Indonesia. In Bali, the BPBD has mapped drought-prone areas and forest fire risks, having already distributed 521,000 liters of clean water to affected families in Buleleng, Jembrana, and Karangasem.

In West Java, the situation is equally severe. Situ Cileunca in Bandung Regency has seen water levels drop by approximately 40 meters, threatening the primary water source for thousands. In Ciamis, the BPBD has distributed 395,000 liters of water to over 11,000 people across 15 districts, while Pupuk Kujang has provided 32,000 liters to southern Karawang.

Other regions are also struggling: Probolinggo has seen continuous water distribution to 19 villages since June, and in East Kalimantan, the Perumda Air Minum Danum Taka reported a total shutdown of water services in Penajam and Babulu due to drying raw water sources. Additionally, Jeneponto has seen emergency water deliveries to combat local shortages.
