Water infrastructure expansion efforts in Uganda and Rwanda

In Uganda, the Kiryandongo District has launched 20 deep borehole projects valued at Shs652 million to improve access to safe water and combat waterborne diseases. The investment includes 10 newly launched projects worth Shs321 million and 10 completed boreholes worth Shs331 million. Local officials emphasized the importance of these facilities in building community resilience against prolonged dry spells that have impacted the region for three consecutive agricultural seasons.

In Rwanda, the Ministry of Infrastructure reported that daily water treatment capacity rose to 367,176 cubic metres during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. This increase follows the construction of 36,674 kilometres of water pipelines and the expansion of WASAC Group branches from 20 to 32. The government aims to achieve universal clean water access by 2029, with current data indicating that 89.7% of the population already has access to clean water.
