Water infrastructure projects advance in Zimbabwe and Malawi
Infrastructure projects in Zimbabwe and Malawi are advancing to improve community access to clean water. In Bindura, Zimbabwe, the Masembura water transmission line is 95 percent complete. This $3 million project, co-funded by the Bindura Municipality and Fredda Rebecca Gold Mine, consists of a 22-kilometre pipeline connecting Masembura Dam to the town. Officials state the project will provide sustainable, potable water free from industrial and mining contamination. Following completion, the municipality intends to seek investment to upgrade its water treatment plant capacity.
In Malawi, a K249 million piped water supply project has been launched at the Bulala Trading Centre in the Mzimba district. Funded through the Reformed K5 billion Constituency Development Fund, the project is managed by the M’mbelwa District Council. The initiative includes the installation of solar-powered submersible pumps, solar systems, two tanks, and 10 water points. The project aims to reduce reliance on streams and rivers, thereby mitigating the risk of waterborne illnesses and reducing the distance traveled by women and girls to fetch water.
