WASH sector developments in Africa
Overview
Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives and infrastructure developments are being addressed across several African nations.
In Mozambique, WaterAid has highlighted risks to the sustainability of WASH infrastructure in primary health centers, noting that inadequate maintenance and funding can diminish the impact of investments. To combat water loss, the Maputo Water and Sanitation Supply Society (SAAS-Maputo) introduced ‘ReporteFugas’, a digital platform designed for citizens to report leaks.
In Malawi, the WASH Media Forum, supported by WaterAid, conducted hygiene-focused actions at Bwaila Hospital, including donating sanitizers and handwashing equipment to maternity and cholera wards. Simultaneously, Sierra Leone announced a 10-year development program for its WASH sector requiring approximately $7 billion. This includes a World Bank-supported phased project and ongoing discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) regarding technical cooperation.
