Water main burst in Shau Kei Wan affects over 10,000 households

A major 18-inch cast iron water main burst during road maintenance work on Shau Kei Wan Road on the morning of May 27. The incident occurred around 10:30 AM when a contractor's heavy machinery likely struck the pipe, which had been in use for over 30 years. The impact caused a crack over one meter long, resulting in massive flooding on the roads and surrounding areas.

The burst caused significant damage to local businesses and an elderly home, where windows were shattered by the force of the muddy water. One elderly resident sustained a leg injury and required hospital treatment.

The Water Supplies Department reported that the shutdown affected more than 10,000 residents and businesses across Siu Sai Wan, Shau Kei Wan, Oi Cha Wan, and the areas from Ap Kung Rock Road to Heung To Road. To mitigate the impact, authorities deployed over 10 water tankers, set up more than 100 temporary water tanks, and distributed 10,000 bottles of water to those in need. Repairs were expected to be completed by midnight.
