Water supply disruptions in Hong Kong
Overview
Multiple incidents of water pipe and main bursts have caused significant supply disruptions across various Hong Kong residential and commercial areas.
In mid-October, pipe bursts in Tin Shui Wai and Ngau Chi Wan affected saltwater and freshwater supplies respectively. In Tin Shui Wai, a saltwater pipe burst impacted Tin Yue Estate and parts of Tin Chung Yuen. In Ngau Chi Wan, a burst at Ping Shek Estate caused a temporary suspension of water to floors below the 16th floor of Hung Shek House.
Later in May, a major 18-inch cast iron water main burst during road maintenance on Shau Kei Wan Road. The incident, likely caused by heavy machinery striking a 30-year-old pipe, resulted in flooding and damage to local businesses and an elderly home. The shutdown affected more than 10,000 residents and businesses across Siu Sai Wan, Shau Kei Wan, and Oi Cha Wan. Authorities responded by deploying water tankers and distributing bottled water to mitigate the impact.
