Water management challenges reported in Chihuahua and Ipiales

In Chihuahua, Mexico, Rural Development Secretary Mauro Parada Muñoz emphasized the need to link agriculture with water recovery. During the Expo Agro Internacional Chihuahua, he discussed the Tabalaopa Treated Wastewater Irrigation District project, which aims to restore aquifers by reusing water for agricultural purposes. Parada Muñoz noted that while the agricultural sector is a major water user, it is also a primary investor, and moving toward a circular water economy is essential for sustainable production.

In Ipiales, Colombia, the municipality is facing a water crisis. Empoobando announced a 48-hour partial suspension of potable water services due to maintenance on Conduction Line Number 3. Simultaneously, the Departmental Council for Risk Management has declared a public calamity because the network water is unfit for human consumption. This contamination is linked to high pollutant loads and the aging Puenes treatment plant, which is over 90 years old. A health outbreak has already affected 2,152 people with acute diarrheal diseases.
