Water management issues reported in Mura River and Karlovac
Croatia is facing significant water-related challenges, ranging from ecological threats in river systems to infrastructure failures in urban areas.
In Podturen, the Mura River has reached a record low water level, dropping approximately 1.5 meters. Local fishermen from SRD Šaran Podturen warn that this decline, attributed to climate change and invasive duckweed, is threatening aquatic life due to oxygen depletion. They are calling for the revitalization and deepening of the riverbed to preserve the ecosystem.
In Karlovac, the local SDP political organization has criticized the city's water management system. The city faces frequent issues with turbid, discolored water and dry taps. Despite previous promises to reduce water loss, official data indicates that losses remain above 60 percent, significantly exceeding the acceptable 25 percent threshold. The organization highlighted that even major leaks are often not treated as urgent if they do not cause a total service interruption.
