Zacatecas to receive 1.66 billion peso investment for irrigation modernization

The Mexican government, through the National Water Commission (Conagua) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, has signed an agreement to modernize irrigation in Zacatecas. The project involves an investment of over 1.66 billion pesos to technify 7,710 hectares within Irrigation District 034.

The initiative, part of a broader National Irrigation Technification Program, aims to increase food production while reducing water usage. The project is expected to benefit more than 9,200 users and could recover up to 6.5 million cubic meters of water per agricultural cycle. Saved water may be redirected to urban and domestic consumption.

Of the total investment, 500 million pesos in federal resources will be applied during 2026 and 2027. The agreement, effective from 2026 to 2029, includes the rehabilitation of irrigation canals, gates, and other structures. Additionally, the program provides full financing for small-scale producers with fewer than five hectares.
