Water infrastructure and irrigation investment in Zacatecas
Overview
The Mexican government has initiated large-scale water infrastructure and irrigation modernization projects in Zacatecas. Through an agreement between the National Water Commission (Conagua) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, over 1.66 billion pesos will be invested to technify 7,710 hectares in Irrigation District 034 between 2026 and 2029. This program aims to increase food production and recover up to 6.5 million cubic meters of water per cycle for potential redirection to urban use.
Complementing these agricultural efforts, the Zacatecas state administration is focusing on potable water services. Governor David Monreal Ávila has prioritized the strengthening of the state’s hydraulic network through the drilling of new wells and the rehabilitation of existing networks to ensure water access through 2027.
