Water resources face severe tension following summer 2026 drought

The summer of 2026 has been characterized by high temperatures and significant rainfall deficits, placing water resources under severe tension. In the Chartreuse-Guiers watershed, despite its typical abundance of precipitation, the lack of rain has significantly impacted river levels and groundwater resources.

While groundwater levels provided sufficient drinking water throughout the summer due to a wet spring, these reserves have been steadily declining since May. As of October, the proportion of aquifers sitting below seasonal norms continues to rise. Consequently, water restrictions remain in effect, with Isère at a crisis level and Savoie under reinforced alert. Authorities emphasize the need for collective efforts to reduce consumption as these heatwaves and droughts are expected to recur.
