Water supply crises reported in Panama and Chile

Communities in Panama and Chile are facing significant challenges regarding access to safe drinking water.

In Panama, residents of Chilibre, Pedregal, and Betania are experiencing worsening water shortages. Members of the Panama Municipal Council have reported that areas previously only affected during peak hours are now facing total service interruptions. Council members have requested an explanation from Antonio Tercero, director of the National Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (Idaan), regarding production, distribution, and the impact of numerous leaks in the district. The shortage is particularly impacting elderly residents and those with illnesses.

In Chillán Viejo, Chile, residents of Rucapequén have protested against high levels of manganese contamination in their water supply. Local community leaders report that the manganese levels have rendered the water undrinkable, creating health risks and domestic difficulties. The protest, led by the Rucapequén Neighborhood Association, seeks urgent intervention from authorities to provide access to dignified and safe water conditions.
