Water utilities in Chile and Mexico launch major sewer and water line upgrades, prompting road closures

Aguas del Altiplano announced that on 13 July it will begin a large‑scale renovation of a sewer collector on Avenida Arturo Prat in Iquique, Chile. The project will replace 843 m of pipes, with an initial 478 m stage requiring the full closure of the westbound lane between Riquelme and Vivar. To reduce traffic disruption, the utility and local authorities have devised a dynamic traffic‑flow plan that reverses the direction of the eastbound lane according to the time of day – south‑to‑north from 07:00 to 15:00 and north‑to‑south from 15:00 to 07:00 the next morning.

El Paso Water started a separate infrastructure rehabilitation on 7 July, targeting potable‑water and sewer lines in the central area of the city. The works will keep Rio Grande Avenue (between Lee and Laurel Streets), the intersection of Dallas Street with Rio Grande Avenue, and Williams Street closed to traffic until at least November. Signage and detour routes will be provided, and the utility expects only minimal interruptions to water service while striving to maintain access for residents.

Both projects aim to modernise aging water‑service networks and improve reliability, while requiring temporary road closures and traffic‑management measures to protect workers and motorists.
