Waterschap Hollandse Delta updates dredging and storm readiness

Waterschap Hollandse Delta has announced several operational updates regarding water management and storm preparedness in the Netherlands.

Starting July 1, 2027, the water board will implement more frequent dredging to improve water quality and flow. In most areas, dredging will occur every eight years, while peat meadow areas will see maintenance every six years. In urban areas like Dordrecht, the cycle will increase from twelve to eight years. In urban zones, dredging will now extend to the solid bottom. To support landowners, the dredging receipt contribution will be indexed starting July 1, 2026, to better reflect processing costs. Additionally, the service window for dredging will expand from five to seven days to allow farmers more flexibility for activities like sowing.

In preparation for the storm season that began on October 1, 2026, the water board has completed inspections of approximately 800 kilometers of dikes and tested various pumps, sluices, and floodgates. Maintenance included repairing grass mats to ensure soil stability. Furthermore, 300 volunteer dike wardens completed their annual training to assist with monitoring and reporting during high water or storm events.
