Waterschap Hollandse Delta water management updates

Waterschap Hollandse Delta has announced updates to its water management and flood prevention strategies in the Netherlands.

Regarding dredging operations, the water board will increase frequency starting July 1, 2027. Maintenance will occur every six years in peat meadow areas and every eight years in other regions. In urban areas such as Dordrecht, the cycle will be reduced from twelve to eight years, with dredging extending to the solid bottom. To support landowners, dredging receipt contributions will be indexed starting July 1, 2026, to reflect processing costs, and the service window for farmers will expand from five to seven days.

In terms of flood prevention and infrastructure, the board has completed inspections of approximately 800 kilometers of dikes and tested various pumps, sluices, and floodgates in preparation for the storm season. Additionally, the board is investigating upgrades in Flakkee-west, including more powerful pumping stations and temporary water storage, while exploring four different options for the Zuiderdiep on Goeree-Overflakkee to assess impacts on agriculture, nature, and fisheries.
