Waterspout sighted off the coast of Maiori

A waterspout was observed in the Gulf of Salerno near the coast of Maiori on the Amalfi Coast. The phenomenon, appearing as a long column of water and condensation connecting dark clouds to the sea surface, was visible to many beachgoers shortly after midday.

Meteorological experts note that such waterspouts form due to atmospheric instability, typically when warm, humid air in lower layers meets cooler air at higher altitudes. While these vortices can be brief and dissipate quickly, they are accompanied by sudden wind gusts that pose risks to small vessels, fishermen, and swimmers.
