Wayland adoption surges as Linux users abandon X11; KDE releases Plasma 6.7.1 update

A security surge has driven most Linux desktop users to migrate from the legacy X11 system to Wayland. Reported Linux vulnerabilities jumped 967 % in 2024, with critical X.Org flaws disclosed in early 2025 prompting administrators to prioritize the newer display server. By early 2025, roughly 80 % of performance‑oriented Linux distributions were running Wayland, and many organizations are deploying AI‑assisted tools to cope with the flood of CVE reports.

Amid this transition, the KDE community issued the Plasma 6.7.1 point release. The update does not add major features but delivers numerous bug fixes, translation improvements, and performance tweaks aimed at stabilising Wayland sessions. Enhancements include better window‑manager reliability, session‑restore handling, and refined input and display behaviour. The release is rolling out to major distributions such as KDE neon, Arch Linux, openSUSE Tumbleweed, and Fedora Rawhide, ensuring that users receive a more dependable Wayland experience while the broader Linux ecosystem continues to phase out X11.
