Waymo challenges Tesla's camera-only autonomous driving strategy
Waymo is intensifying its technical debate with Tesla regarding the optimal sensor suite for autonomous driving. Srikanth Thirumalai, Waymo's VP of onboard software, stated in a recent blog post that cameras alone are insufficient for safe, full autonomy. Waymo advocates for a redundant system utilizing cameras, lidar, and radar to provide 3D geometry and visibility through adverse weather, whereas Tesla relies primarily on a camera-only approach.
As Waymo expands its commercial robotaxi operations to more than a dozen U.S. cities, including a recent launch in Denver, the company reports completing over 200 million autonomous miles and facilitating 500,000 paid trips per week. In Denver, local police have established specific protocols for interacting with driverless Waymo vehicles, including instructions for officers to communicate with remote representatives via QR codes or dispatch buttons.
Simultaneously, Elon Musk has signaled that Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will soon include the ability to avoid potholes, a feature that has been mentioned in software update notes but has not seen a full fleet rollout despite similar promises made years ago. This technological rivalry comes as Tesla prepares for the upcoming unveiling of its purpose-built Cybercab.
