The research found that Waymo vehicles had a 68% lower accident involvement rate per million miles compared to human drivers, including an 85% reduction in single-vehicle accidents. However, performance varied by location: Phoenix and Los Angeles saw significant reductions, while San Francisco saw a 35% reduction, and Austin reported an accident rate 3% to 4% higher than human drivers.

As Waymo expands its commercial robotaxi operations to more than a dozen U.S. cities, including Denver, the company reports completing over 200 million autonomous miles and facilitating 500,000 paid trips per week.
