Waymo expands autonomous ride-hailing in Arizona and California

Waymo is significantly expanding its autonomous ride-hailing operations in both Arizona and California. In Arizona, the company is adding 55 square miles to its Phoenix service area, bringing its total footprint in the Valley to over 350 square miles. This expansion includes several East Valley neighborhoods such as Gilbert and parts of Chandler, and will eventually include access to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

In California, the California Public Utilities Commission has approved a major expansion covering 18 counties, stretching from Sonoma in the north to San Diego in the south. This regulatory approval allows Waymo to charge for fully driverless rides across the entire Bay Area and Los Angeles, while also opening new markets in Sacramento and San Diego. The service will operate across various road types and weather conditions, excluding widespread snow or ice. Waymo currently operates a fleet of approximately 3,000 vehicles and is targeting one million rides per week by the end of this year.
