Waymo expands autonomous ride-hailing to San Diego and Singapore
Waymo is significantly expanding its autonomous ride-hailing operations both in the United States and internationally. In California, the company has launched public rides in San Diego following approval from the California Public Utilities Commission. This expansion covers a 50-square-mile area, though initial service excludes airports and freeways. The rollout follows a broader regulatory clearance allowing driverless service across 18 California counties, including the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
Internationally, Waymo has announced plans to enter the Singapore market by 2028. Supported by Singapore’s Ministry of Transport and Land Transport Authority, the company will initially deploy a fleet of Jaguar I-PACE vehicles. Before full commercial operations begin, autonomous specialists will conduct manual driving in 2027 to adapt the technology to local road geometry and monsoon weather patterns. This move aligns with the Singapore Green Plan 2030 by providing electric, first- and last-mile transport options.
