Waymo expands robotaxi fleet as sensor tech advances drive autonomous vehicle growth

Waymo announced a $16 billion investment to accelerate its robotaxi program, targeting more than 20 new cities worldwide, including trials in London and Tokyo, and expanding service in U.S. hubs such as Miami, Dallas and Nashville. The company plans to triple its fleet size, adding thousands of driverless cars to its network. In China, Baidu’s Apollo Go service in Wuhan already operates thousands of fully autonomous taxis, offering rides at roughly 30 % lower cost than human‑driven services.

At the same time, advances in perception and sensor‑fusion technology are boosting the capabilities of autonomous vehicles. The market for 4D imaging radar is projected to grow from $390 million in 2025 to $1.2 billion by 2030. New products such as Hirain Technologies’ LRR615 radar, built on Arbe Robotics’ 4D radar chipset, provide high‑density point clouds and can be paired with cameras as a cost‑effective alternative to LiDAR. These sensor innovations are expected to improve real‑time object detection, classification and navigation for both robotaxi fleets and advanced driver‑assistance systems.
