Waymo expands robotaxi services with new Ojai model
Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary, is expanding its autonomous vehicle operations in the United States with the introduction of its new robotaxi model, the Ojai. The company announced that this updated model, which features a silver exterior and upgraded interior amenities such as wireless chargers and improved seating, will begin service in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and San Francisco in the coming weeks.
Data regarding Waymo's operations in Los Angeles shows a significant increase in reported incidents. In 2025, the company recorded 219 crashes, more than triple the 69 reported the previous year. As of October 5, 2026, the count has already reached 186. Waymo maintains that while the absolute number of accidents has risen alongside fleet expansion, the rate of accidents per mile driven has actually decreased, falling from 57 to fewer than six per million miles between 2023 and 2026. Most recorded incidents were minor, with over 80% resulting in no apparent injuries.
The expansion involves components such as batteries and motors being sent to an assembly and testing base in Mesa, Arizona. The new Ojai model was developed with assistance from the high-end electric vehicle brand Zeekr.
