Waymo to launch its own app, ending Uber robotaxi exclusivity in Austin and Atlanta

Alphabet’s autonomous‑vehicle unit Waymo is preparing to exit its exclusive robotaxi partnership with ride‑hailing platform Uber. The company has notified Uber that it will launch a dedicated Waymo app in Austin and Atlanta in January 2028, while the existing contract keeps Waymo vehicles on Uber’s platform through at least May 2028.

The move follows months of escalating tensions over vehicle cleanliness, routing, and what Uber calls “unsustainable financial terms.” Waymo and Uber also split their earlier joint operation in Phoenix in mid‑2026. After the news broke, Uber’s share price fell more than 4 percent, while Waymo’s parent Alphabet saw a modest rise. The split will allow Uber to add other autonomous‑vehicle providers in the two markets and give Waymo direct control over its rider experience.
