Waymo prepares European robotaxi launch with Allianz insurance partnership

Waymo is preparing to introduce its robotaxi services to Europe, with plans to begin transporting passengers without drivers in London later this year. The company aims to expand into Munich by 2027, which is intended to be its first location within the European Union.

To address the legal and logistical complexities of autonomous driving, Waymo has partnered with Allianz Partners. The collaboration focuses on creating a comprehensive insurance system to handle accidents involving driverless vehicles. This includes determining liability, managing damage claims, and arranging vehicle recovery.

Because traditional driver behavior cannot be assessed in autonomous accidents, the partnership will address scenarios where technical failures, sensor errors, or software issues are the cause. In such cases, liability may shift from the fleet operator to the vehicle manufacturer or technology provider. Allianz is developing product liability solutions alongside standard automotive insurance to manage these risks.
