Waymo’s autonomous taxi fleet in Austin has received a total of $9,325 in civil parking penalties since the service began in 2024. City records show 83 citations, with 64 violations for stopping in tow‑away zones, the most common infraction across the fleet. Other tickets include expired meters, double parking and a $519 fine for occupying a space reserved for drivers with disabilities. Residents have complained that the robotaxis block garage entrances and even stop near rail crossings, prompting criticism from local officials and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has warned that autonomous vehicles sometimes impede emergency responders. Waymo says it is paying the fines and working on system‑level fixes to improve how its vehicles choose stopping locations.
